How to care for a lawn?

lawn care
irobot10 asked:

I just bought a new house and I do not know ANYTHING about lawns. I have lived in apartment style mostly high-rise buildings all my life and always wanted to have a backyard. Now I have one, but no clue whatsoever how to maintain it… Any help/tips to get me started would be appreciated! – starting from –
1) how / how much / when to water?
2) i have not seen anybody holding a water pipe and watering the lawn.. does everybody have a sprinkler system? where do i go to get one? is it expensive?
3) how / how much / when do i put fertilizers in the grass?
4) how do i know which is good grass and which is weed?

Thanks much!

As far as watering is concerned, it really depends on where you are located (average summer temperature and rainfall amounts very from one area to another). It also depends on the type of grass already in place. If for example you live in the south (such as Texas) where the avg daily summer temp is 100 degrees, and you have an established Bermuda grass lawn you can expect to water about twice a week. Essentially, you want to make sure that the lawn receives about a quarter inch of water – two times a week. To test water coverage – simply place an empty can (the type that tuna and pet foods are packaged in) in your yard and turn on the sprinkler. When you have a quarter inch of water in the can – you are good to go.
If you rarely see the neighbors watering – you are probably correct in assuming they have a sprinkler system. In terms of cost, sprinkler systems can in fact get expensive. On average, you can expect to pay about 2000 dollars for an automated set up – but keep in mind this all depends on the size of your lawn.
In terms of maintaining the lawn, you should aim to fertilize about four times a year (once for every season). To help prevent weeds, it helps to apply a pre emergent and post emergent to your lawn in the spring and early summer. Since weeds come in all shape and form – just look for anything that looks different than the established grass. In general, most weeds have larger, broader leaves and either bud or flower during the peak of summer. Just remember – research is the key, and there are chemicals for just about everyting.
    Good luck
