vtn53 asked:

im looking to start a lawn care business with some buddies and was wondering if anyone had personal experiences to share or even 2nd hand knowledge of what it is like, the income, and managing of it.

what would be required to start the business, besides the obvious capital and equipment.

First YOU DON’T NEED YOUR BUDDIES.

    Never take on partners.

It’s the biggest mistake you can make.

I started a lawncare business and it got me through college.

I had to laugh when I was graduating because all the job offers paid LESS than I was making part time in the landscaping business.

I agree with the other poster, that you should not take on any partners, especially if they are friends. I say this because it rarely works out. One of you will feel the other is doing less work and it will end in a disaster. Trust me. I have owned numerous businesses and have never taken on a partner but have seen it all.

To answer your question, specifically about lawn care, it really depends on how much work you plan on putting in to it.

If you are going to get customers the traditional way through door to door visits, some local flyers or whatever, the key to any good business is the customer service.

If you do a great job for a fair price they will want you back. If your goal is to knock out the lawncare quickly for a fast buck it will be a one time deal with that customer.

You can make a lot of money doing this, if you put in the energy, time and effort but most importantly keep the customer happy.

The cost to acquire one customer is far more than you think. Lets assume you knock on 100 doors or drop 100 flyers and you get 5 customers. That took your time and money to get the 5% of customers. Now if you do the job only 1 time each for those customers you gained nothing in my mind. Now if those customers use your weekly and like your work, they will tell their friends and the word of mouth viral marketing takes off.

To start a business like this, you should contact whoever you need to, to get the appropriate license if needed. Start an LLC which is very cheap, this will protect you somewhat. Ask your bank if they can point you in the right direction or anyone else you know.

The key to any business is if you do it right the first time, the business will come and it will come in droves, if your product is good and at a fair price.

    Good luck.
