Your lawn needs at least 1″ of water per week – which was really hard for most of us to do this year with the drought. The fertilizer, without watering, probably “burned” the grass. Not sure where you are, but if the weather has turned cold then I would not recommend putting down sod/seed right now as the drought is still going on. Try making sure your yard gets 1″ of water each week (set out any old container in the yard to catch the water and you’ll be able to tell how much water your yard is getting – most people use old plastic containers or coffee cans). Anyway, more fertilizer may be just a waste of money right now – I’d recommend watering and seeing how much of the grass “comes back”, and then re-seed/sod to plug up the empty spots.

    Hi:
There are a couple of possibilities for you to think about. You might have put too much fertilizer on and this could kill the grass. Also, if it wasn’t properly watered through the hot months, this can damage any lawn.

I recommend to my clients when this happens to rent an aerator and aerate your entire lawn. You can rent an aerator at most rental places. This hand held equipment is a round tank with spikes around the tank. You fill the tank with water and push it around your lawn. This will put tiny holes in the soil. Over seed and stay on a good watering schedule. This should help. It is not unusual to fertilize in the spring and fall seasons. If you plan to fertilize now, I would purchase a six months nitrogen slow release. Just use a samll amount.

I hope this has helped some and good luck to you. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at my landscape solutions website. Take a look at my simple solutions section and also my site map to see if you can find any other information. Have a great day!

The high nitrogen content of synthetic chemical fertilizer burned your lawn. This is yet another reason why you should not use synthetic fertilizers. I would recommend re-seeding the patches where you have no grass and it should gradually fill in. To prevent this from happening again, switch to an organic fertilizer like Milorganite. Also, cut your lawn at a height of 3″ or as high as your mower will go during the hot months (if not all the time). There is a direct correlation between the length of your grass blades and the depth of the roots. The longer the roots the more drought tolerant your grass will be.
