And when I go to buy grass seed, how do I identify which kind of grass I have, therefore which kind of seed to buy?

best to scatter the seed on the bald bits then just use a small trowel or something to just dig it in a bit. you dont need to sow it deeply just an inch at the very most. give it plenty of water when it starts to shoot.
The easiest thing to do is remove the dead grass, scratch up the soil, put down some premix seed (Scotts Patchmaster) and water. Or you could by some starter fertilizer, seed and peatmoss and put that down. Look at the different seed packages to determine which is best for the area of the lawn you are fixing.
The expensive seed has fewer weeds in it.
