My lawn is in bad shape. Can someone tell me step by step what I need to do to revive it? How often do I water? What should I do to revive it? How do I fill in dead patches? I live in Nevada where it is fairly dry.

You should check out diynetwork.com as they have answer to any project or can find an expert who knows and its free,, you will not get good step-step help here as your problem is too big and there could be many problems with your lawn..
you need to have your lawn tested to see what minerals it may need,, use an aerator to let in water and air, if you grab a hand full of dirt it should clump together and slightly fall apart when you open your hand,, you should be able to easily tell if its too dry or wet! watering depends on your drainage, weather conditions, etc.. fertilizing will depend on what the soil ph tests show!!
